Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.
Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:
$3,376 - $3,600/Mon.
DUTIES:
Works as a member of the Instrument Division.
Maintains, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, and upgrades mainly but not limited to, scientific instruments or supporting equipment.
Prepares, and maintains instrument manuals and technical documents.
Maintains service logs and inventory records for instruments and equipment.
Maintains and organizes laboratories, summit instrument areas and parts/supply needs.
Supports tests and operation of the Subaru telescope.
Duties require periodic or emergency, summit and/or nighttime duties.
Assists in designing, developing, fabricating or testing of new observatory instruments and support equipment.
Requires regular summit and/or nighttime duties.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college or graduation from an accredited trade apprenticeship program.
(High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least three (3) years of related experience necessary to perform this job duties at a large telescope or equivalent work environment may substitute for an Associate’s Degree or trades apprenticeship training program.).
EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience with hands-on practical experience in designing, fabricating, installing or testing various types of scientific instruments or equipment for research. Experience in analog, and digital control electronics, and optics as applied to astronomical instrumentation.
KNOWLEDGE: Understanding of basic physical principles which relate to scientific instrumentation.
Knowledge of personal computer (PC) use and its basic office software for communication and basic logging. Basic knowledge of maintenance and electrical procedures.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Proficiency with standard email, word processing, spreadsheet, simple CAD programs and general computer operation, including Google Apps and Microsoft Office.
Proficiency with common hand tools and simple machine shop tools. Ability to assist with troubleshooting and conducting repairs on specific scientific instruments and supporting equipment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Ability to climb ladders and work at high places with a safety harness.
Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds of equipment unassisted. Must be able to maintain a safe work environment. Must be able to continuously demonstrate an ability to work safely in a physically demanding work environment (e.g., extreme temperatures and atmospheric conditions associated with high altitude (14,000+ feet above sea level) conditions. Post Offer/Employment Condition:
Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.
Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Aptitude for learning new skills, as the position requires employees to take occasional technical training or retraining. Ability to comprehend, speak or understand Japanese. Possession of certifications to verify skills such as electrical, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), using machining machines or welding. Basic computer skills in operating UNIX workstation. Ability to read and follow blueprints and electrical schematics.
Experience in Electro-mechanics, vacuum technology and cryogenics are desirable. Knowledge of astronomical instrumentation is desirable. Working in laboratories and a summit telescope site is desirable. Excellent communication skills with on-site observers and with staff at remote sites is desirable.
