Job Vacancy - Telescope Control Systems Technician I

Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,000 - $4,100/Mon.

DUTIES: Maintains, tests, makes adjustments, troubleshoots, repairs and upgrades the drives and control systems for the telescope and enclosure in collaboration with the Telescope Control Systems Engineers (TCSE). Maintains and upgrades technical documentation and reports to the Telescope Engineering Division Chief on the results of the electronic works of the telescope and enclosure. Duties include off-hour, including weekends and holidays, troubleshooting, diagnosing, servicing and repairing of the system in collaboration with or without the TCSE, or other technical staff. Assists in planning, scheduling, and estimating the cost of future projects. The position requires primarily on-site duties at the Mauna Kea and secondarily some desk work at the Hilo Base. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee’s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in relevant field of study or equivalent such as Electronics, Electro-technics, or Electro-mechanics.
EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience, to include hands-on practical experience in testing, adjusting, and installing various types of equipment for research at major observatories. (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university and up to one (0-1) year of experience may substitute.)
KNOWLEDGE: General knowledge of electronics, circuits, and computer operation. Knowledge of PC and basic office software for communication, reporting, editing manuals, etc.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Skills for hands-on maintenance and repair of equipment according to instruction manuals.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in electro-mechanics for astronomical telescopes and it’s enclosures. Prior experience at high altitude telescope site.
