Job Summary
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Maunakea and Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
HOURLY RATE: $23.66/Hr.
DUTIES:
Assists the Observations System Associate (OSA) during nighttime operations by starting up/shutting down the telescope following an established procedure, taking calibration data for the instruments by following an established procedure, monitoring the safety and health of the personnel at the summit, checking the system and the weather periodically, recording them in the online log and operating the system from the console or from the control panel under the oversight of the OSA (who is either in the control room or outside the room for the troubleshooting). Assists OSA to take remedial actions and report them. Assists OSA in the nighttime security and safety of the facility. In some circumstances when the OSA is not on duty at the summit facility, the Night Operation Assistant (NOA) takes over the OSA’s role. Assists with transporting observers to and from the summit site. Participates in regular team meetings, trainings, occasional maintenance/services, acquisition of telescope/instrument data, coordination of first responses to night time trouble reports, documentation of manuals/reports.
Participates in repair/upgrade of telescope system components. Typical rotation schedule is five (5) consecutive full-nights of summit duties followed by six (6) or seven (7) days off. Actual schedule depends on the operational needs and is a mixture of the full-night duties and daytime duties, if any.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with an emphasis in Astronomy, Science or a technical field.
EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience working in astronomy, science, engineering, or technical fields. At least one (1) year of driving experience.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic astronomy concepts, standard word processing, and spreadsheet software.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to operate large-scale precision mechanical system, electrical system or electronics with high complexity. Ability to startup and shutdown a telescope. Ability to effectively interact and communicate through electronic mail and in person. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must possess Certification in Emergency Medical Response for Adult First Aid, emergency oxygen administration, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) usage (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to sleep at high altitude (Hale Pohaku: 9,000 feet).
Must be able to lift and carry thirty (30) pounds of equipment unassisted. Able to climb ladders, to crawl on one's hands into narrow spaces and to work in narrow areas without any problems. Post Offer/Employment Condition:
Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience and training in optics, electronics, electrical, or mechanical systems. Experience in astronomical observation and operation of the telescope in a college course from an accredited college or university. Bilingual capability in English and Japanese.
