Job Vacancy - NAOJ Adaptive Optics Postdoctoral Fellow

Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to three (3) years in duration with possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,295/Mon.

DUTIES: Supports adaptive optics (AO) wavefront sensing and control technology prototyping and validation in close coordination with international collaborators. Develops and implements real-time wavefront control algorithms. Supports the deployment of real-time software on the Subaru Telescope Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics system (SCExAO) instrument. Works with various software programs (e.g., C, C++, or Linux). Participates in data analysis and scientific publication of findings. Contributes novel ideas/concepts that enrich the scientific capability of current and future exoplanet imaging instrumentation. Pursues independent research related to high contrast imaging techniques, adaptive optics, and exoplanet observations. Drives to access summit sites.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire). EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of experience in adaptive optics control software development. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge in real-time programming. Advanced knowledge of C or C++ programming languages, and Linux operating system. Ability to perform scientific and technical research related to adaptive optics. Skilled in the development of real-time high performance software. Good written and oral communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in development of real-time control software for adaptive optics. Knowledge of Python programming language.
