Detail | : | Low Res. (96 KB) / Mid. Res. (1.7 MB) / High Res. (9.9 MB) NGC 474 is more than twice the size of the Milky Way Galaxy, which has a 100,000 light-year diameter stellar disk. Although it is classified as an elliptical galaxy which is typically smooth and lacking features, this galaxy has arc-like and elongated tail-like features. These features are thought to have formed at a head-on collision with a dwarf galaxy hundreds of millions of years ago.
