As a face-on galaxy, it shows a clear view of the bulge, dust ring, barred structure, and extended spiral arms. In the spiral structure, we can see dust lanes (dark lanes) with relatively dense obscuring clouds of interstellar dust. The color contrast is obvious; the central bulge and bar structure are reddish, and the spiral arms with young stars are bluish. Our Milky Way Galaxy is also a barred spiral galaxy; if we could observe it from the outside, would it look like NGC 521?
