
Energetic Phenomena in the Universe
Novae, supernovae, and gamma ray bursts are energetic explosions that take place in various places in the universe. Recently, astronomers have tracked down the source of gravitational waves and discovered the first-observed kilonova explosion caused by neutron star mergers. These explosive phenomena are considered to play a major role in producing heavy elements in the universe. Their study leads us to deeper understanding of the evolution of matter in the universe. Using the unique capability of the Subaru Telescope, astronomers have been conducting cutting-edge study in this field. For example, Subaru’s wide-field camera enabled to discover explosions in the universe.

Among 8-meter class telescopes, the Subaru Telescope has the the world largest field of view and therefore is the most powerful telescope to search for explosive phenomena in the universe. Future observations of distant supernovae will help us understand the star formation history as well as expansion history of the universe. By observing and monitoring an extensive area of the sky, we may discover new energetic phenomena that have never been witnessed before.
