Data delivery and feedback

Delivery package

PIs will each receive an email containing instructions on how to download their data. There are three options:

  • A python-based script for automatic download of the data package from MASTARS or STARS.
  • An anonymous login and password for download from Hilo/Mitaka archives, sent using a OneTimeSecret.
  • A personal STARS login and password, with a list of URLs to choose from.

Note that, in contrast to the classical mode, some calibration frames (like dome flats), may not have been obtained on the same night as scientific frames, so there is no next-day delivery for QM.

The email will also summarize the progress of your programme to date, i.e., which OBs had been executed and which are still to be taken, or need to be repeated (identified by a Code given on the ob tab of the Phase 2 spreadsheets. Comments (if any) from FQA for each OB and frame will be available. Finally, the email will include the weather logs and reports, in order to inform PIs of the environmental conditions under which each OB had been executed.

Because OBs from the same program might be executed over several nights, PIs may expect to receive several such messages. Notification will be sent and data will be delivered also for OBs that were executed, but did not pass FQA and are to be repeated.

Should PIs find any issue with the data quality, please contact hsc-queue_at_naoj.org. Re-execution of OBs that had previously executed and assessed to be good in FQA but found to be problematic may be considered, if they are critical to accomplishing the science goal(s) of the program. In a disputed case the final decision will be made by the director of Subaru Telescope. Note that a swift inquiry after the data delivery would be desirable to increase chances of re-execution, since it must take place in the same semester, while the targets are still available.

Archiving at SMOKA

The HSC QM data are subject to the same archiving policy as any other Subaru Telescope data. In principle, scientific data taken with Subaru Telescope are archived after an 18-month proprietary period. This is when they become publicly available at Subaru Mitaka Okayama Kiso Archive (SMOKA).

An extension of the proprietary period may be granted. An official request has to be submitted with a detailed justification.

Feedback to the observatory

In order to ensure improved, more efficient operations in the future, as well as the satisfaction of the QM users, we ask for your feedback. We encourage you to stay in touch with us and to ask any questions, especially in the Phase 2 period and during observing runs. All inquiries should be directed to hsc-queue_at_naoj.org.
