Around 2:00 pm (Hawaii local time) on September 15, 2023, when the telescope was lowered to near horizontal during maintenance work of Subaru Telescope, an abnormal value was detected in the primary mirror support mechanism, and that situation continues.
As it is not possible to continue observations safely under these circumstances, we suspend our observations until September 24th and conduct a thorough investigation into the causes and effects on the telescope. We will notify you when observations resume. There was no human damage caused by this incident.
