The gravitational lensing effect creates distorted images of a background galaxy based on the positional relationship between the background galaxy (the light source) and the foreground object (the gravitational lensing source). Along with the ring-shaped image introduced in the gallery on February 5, 2025, an arc-shaped image can also appear. In this image, multiple arc-like structures surround the center of the galaxy cluster. Like a ring or an arc, the clearly visible gravitational lensing effect is called “strong gravitational lensing.” Regions like this galaxy cluster, where galaxies are densely clustered, contain large amounts of dark matter, which is the source of the gravity.
