STARS/MASTARS Instructions

STARS and MASTARS will be available according to the following schedule. Refer to http://www.naoj.org/stn for other schedules for computer transitions.

Known Issues as of 2/22/2008 JST

http authentication is not properly set.
Change User Info does not work.

First of all

Who has an account for the new STARS/MASTARS?

Those who are subject to the STARS account transition in 2008. They should received a notification e-mail from Subaru Telescope.

1. Main page

STARS from 2/25 HST:: https://stars.naoj.org/
MASTARS from 2/23 JST:: http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/; https://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/ (Only access from outside NAOJ)

Click on "Setup your account" first on the top of the page first.

2. Then you will be asked;

User Account Name
STN-II password
STARS new password
STARS e-mail address

For the first two questions, type your computer account name and password for computer system in Hilo as of February, 2008.

The third entry is the password that works for both STARS and MASTARS. Since the password will be appearing on the command line, avoid a password you use for other computer account, back account or credit card account.

The fourth entry is the mail address. We will send announcements for STARS/MASTARS to this mail address. You can change the mail address later.

3. Click on set and wait for a while after you see change ok.

Wait until you receive an email from stars (at) naoj.org saying that your password and email address were changed. The email is sent to the email address you registered.

4. If you mistyped...

Repeat step 2.

5. Once you complete the settings

You will be able to change your password and email address from "Change User Info" on the top page after 2/26 JST.

Regular usage

6. After the initial settings for your password and email address visit

7. Select "Search the Archive".

You will not be asked your password at this time.

8. Select either "Data transfer mode" or "Detailed query mode", then click on "Login"

You will be asked for the user name and the password. Enter the password you changed in Step 2.

9. Make a search as you used to do with the old STARS/MASTARS.

Since too many search results may cause a problem, only up to 3000 records will be displayed.

10. Search result page is almost the same as it used to be, but

Selection of transfer destination is replaced with increased options for download methods.

Please choose either
O Online O Offline

Online will create tar.gz and you can download it using html. Recent files of ten or less can be downloaded more effectively than offline.
Offline will save the files you selected in the temporary directory. You can download by selecting a file on the web browser or by using wget. Wget is preferable to manual download.

You will see a message such as

e-mail address that transmits message
hogehoge@somewhere

Please make sure the email address you see in this message is yours.

If you choose offline for download method

11. You will see a small dialog box.

Close it by clicking OK. Wait for a while.

12. After that, you will see find an email...

With the subject: MASTARS QUERY Info. (request accepted) delivered to the email address you specified as above. The email will contain the download URL such as http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/ . Data is spooled in this directory.

13. You can access the above directory while the data transfer is in progress.

Try access on your web browser. You will be asked for STARS/MASTARS username and password. You can initiate download by clicking on the link of the file you want to download. FITS files will be downloaded with MIME application/fits. If you can set up your web browser so that the files you downloaded can be opened with ds9.

14. After the transfer,

An email of subject: STARS Reference O.K. will be sent to you. The email includes the URL such as List File URL : http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/0_list_20071106163123 . The link contains the list of URLs. You can save it for download.

15. Download the files using wget

[yourname] and [yourpass] refers your username and password for STARS/MASTARS.

wget -i 0_list_20071106163123 --http-user=[yourname] --http-passwd=[yourpass]

or you can write the following two lines in ~/.wgetrc if you use STARS/MASTARS only and you use wget on UNIX OS;

One this setting is done, you can download files with the following command;

wget -O - http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/0_list_20071106163123 | wget -i -

If you choose online for download method

16. If you selected online at 10,

After a while (it may take long), your web browser will show "Your request is accepted!". Click on "Check" button.

17. Data Transfer has already been completed!

You will see the "Download" page.

Clicking on "Download" button will try to save files such as "20071106170123.tar.gz". Save the file in your local computer. Note that the file is big because it contains all FITS files you request for download as well as the checksum.

18. Help yourself get files from the archive.

You are still able to use the file list as well as to download individual files like you can do "online" mode.

Temporary files and directories

19. Temporary files and directories created by STARS

will be deleted "after a while". A while is currently one week after creation fo files/directories. The period is subject to change.

新 STARS/MASTARS の使い方

以下の日程で、新 STARS, MASTARS が利用可能になります。

○既知の問題点(2008/02/22 HST)
・https の認証が正しく設定できてません
・Change User Info が動きません

●はじめに(最初に使うとき)

０）アカウントがあるのは
　　2008 年の STN2 移行時に STARS アカウント対象になっていた方です。
　　別途ハワイ観測所から連絡があったと思います。

１）メインページは以下です。

STARS 2/25(HST)- 
  https://stars.naoj.org/

MASTARS 2/23(JST)-
  http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/
  https://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/ （天文台外からのみ）

　　上記 URL の一番上の「Setup your account」をクリックします。

２）すると
    - User Account Name 	
    - STN-II password 	
    - STARS New password
    - STARS e-mail address
    が聞かれます。

　　最初の２つは 2008/02 時点でのハワイのアカウント・パスワードを
　　入力してください。

    ３つ目のパスワードは STARS/MASTARS 専用になります。
    後で出てくるようにコマンドラインに埋めたりするので、
    バレても構わない、どうでもいいのを設定して下さい。

　　４つ目はメールアドレスです。
　　このメールアドレスに対し今後広報等が届きます。
　　問題なく届くアドレスを設定してください。
　　なお、このパスワードとアドレスは後から変更も可能です。

３）set を押し、変更ＯＫが出たら、少しお待ちください。
    指定したメールアドレスに  stars@subaru.naoj.org から
    「変更しました」というメールが来るのを待ってください。

４）万一間違えた場合には・・・
　　２の操作を繰り返してください。

５）一回設定した後は、トップページにある
　　「Change User Info」から、変更ができるようになり予定です。
　　＃これは 2/26(JST) 以降になります。

●通常時の利用方法

６）上記、最初の設定をした後、再度、
https://stars.naoj.org/
　　あるいは
http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/
https://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/mastars/ （台外からのみ）
    にアクセスします。

７）「Search the Archive」を選択して下さい。
    ちなみに、この時点ではまだパスワードは聞かれません。

８）「Data Transfer Mode」か「Detailed Query Mode」を選んで 
    「Login」をクリック
　　ここでユーザとパスワードを訪ねられますので、
    ２）で変更したパスワードを使ってアクセスします。

９）従来通り検索して下さい。
    但し、ここで結果の件数が多過ぎると問題が発生しますので、
    最大 3000 件の制限を新たにかけています。

１０）検索結果画面はほとんど以前と同じですが
    従来の転送先指定が消え「download method」が増えています。
    ====
    ＜download method＞
    Please choose either
    ○Online ◎Offline
    ====
    この２つの違いは
    ・Online は tar.gz を作成し、それを HTML で自動ダウンロードする。
      最近かつ 10 枚程度以下の時に特に有効。
    ・Offline はテンポラリディレクトリに落す。ファイルのダウンロードは
      一つ一つ個別か wget でリストを使う。通常はこっちを推奨。
    です。

    その下に
    ===
    e-mail address that transmits message
    hogehoge@somewhere
    ===
    と、設定したメールアドレスが出てくるはずですので
    確認してください。

●Offline を選んで Transfer した場合、

１１）小さい窓がとんできます。それは OK を押すと閉じます。
      そのまま暫く待って下さい。

１２）そのうちに
Subject: MASTARS QUERY Info. (request accepted)
    というメールが設定したアドレス宛に来るはずです。
    この中に
Download URL    : http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/
    みたいな内容が書かれてます。
    ここにデータが溜っていきます。

    なお、MASTARS の場合、天文台内からアクセスした場合と
　　天文台外からアクセスした場合でサーバの実体は違うのですが、
　　利用者がここを意識する必要はありません。

１３）上記ディレクトリは転送中もアクセスできます。
    ブラウザでアクセスしてみて下さい。
    アクセスすると、先ほどと同様に STARS/MASTARS の
    アカウントとパスワードが聞かれます。
    ディレクトリ一覧から個々に右クリック＆ダウンロード可能です。
    また、FITS ファイルは MIME application/fits で送られるようになる予定です。
    WWW ブラウザの設定でアプリケーションで開くように設定すれば、
    例えば ds9 で見ることも可能になります。

１４）転送が完了すると、
Subject: STARS Reference O.K.
    というメールが送られます。この中に、
List File URL   : http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/0_list_20071106163123
    のような URL が書かれます。
    このリストファイルの中身は URL 一覧です。
    このファイルをブラウザで開き、セーブして下さい。

１５）wget を使って以下のように手元にファイルをダウンロードします。
      以下 [yourname] [yourpass] は、それぞれ自分のアカウント、パスワード
      （STARS/MASTARS用）に読み替えてください。
      
wget -i 0_list_20071106163123 --http-user=[yourname] --http-passwd=[yourpass]

     あるいは、wget コマンドを STARS/MASTARS 以外で使わない場合、
     UNIX 系の OS であれば ~/.wgetrc に以下を書けばＯＫです。

http_user = [yourname]
http_passwd = [hogehoge]
==    
     この設定をしておけば、一旦手元でファイルを作成せずとも以下の
     １コマンドで、そのディレクトリにファイルをダウンロードします。

wget -O - http://www.mastars.nao.ac.jp/starsdata/******/20071106163123/0_list_20071106163123 | wget -i -

      以上が Offline の基本操作です。

●Online を選んで Transfer した場合、

１６）10) で online を選んだ場合、
      また暫く待つと（これは更に長く待つはず）WWW ブラウザは
      読み込み中の画面から
        Your request is accepted!
      という画面に遷移します。
      ここで「check」のボタンを押します。

１７）Data Transfer has already been completed!
      「Download」
      というページに来ます。
      ここで「Download」のボタンを押すと
20071106170123.tar.gz
      のようなファイルを保存しようとしますので、ローカルに保存して下さい。
      検索した FITS 全てとチェックサムの tar.gz なので
      非常に大きいです。注意してください。

１８）この tar.gz を展開するなどしてお使い下さい。
      なお、上記 online の時でも、offline 同様にリスト使ったり、
      個々にダウンロードしたりは可能になってます。

●一時ファイルとディレクトリ

１９）Online/Offline で作成されたディレクトリや中間ファイルは
      「そのうちに」消去されます。
      現状は各ファイルごと、作成から１週間ですが、
　　　利用状況によってここは変わる可能性があります。
