Subaru Telescope Resumes Night Observations

On March 3, 2024, the Subaru Telescope resumed night observations as per the announcement "Regarding the suspension of Subaru Telescope night observation (Final Report)".

At twilight on February 17, 2024, just before sunrise, the Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) mounted on the Subaru Telescope captured an image of globular cluster M5 in the constellation Serpens. The stars in the image are resolved with a sharpness of about 0.8 arcseconds, which is roughly equivalent to the seeing on that night. With this image, the Subaru Telescope has demonstrated its original performance.

Figure 1: Globular cluster M5 captured by FOCAS on the Subaru Telescope. This image was created by combining three different wavelengths: B-band (440 nanometers), V-band (550 nanometers), and I-band (805 nanometers). Blue, green, and red colors were assigned to these wavelengths respectively. The exposure times are 8 seconds for B-band, 6 seconds for V-band, and 6 seconds for I-band. (Credit: NAOJ)

We, the Subaru Telescope staff members, will continue to strive to create scientific results through open-use observations.
