Job Summary

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $3,500 - $3,600/Mon.

DUTIES: Entry level position of the Telescope Control Systems Technicians works as a team to carry out: (1) Maintenance, testing, making adjustments, troubleshoots, repairs and upgrades the drives and control systems for the telescope and enclosure in collaboration with the Telescope Control Systems Engineers (TCSE). (2) Maintenance and upgrading technical documentation and reports to the Telescope Engineering Division Chief on the results of the electronic works of the telescope and enclosure. Duties include off-hour, including weekends and holidays, troubleshooting, diagnosing, servicing and repairing of the system in collaboration with or without the TCSE, or other technical staff. Assists in planning, scheduling, and estimating the cost of future projects. The position requires primarily on-site duties at the Mauna Kea and secondarily some desk work at the Hilo Base.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in relevant field of study or equivalent such as Electronics, Electro- technics, or Electro-mechanics.
EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience, to include hands-on practical experience in testing, adjusting, and installing various types of equipment for research at astronomical observatories.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of electronics, circuits, and computer operation. Knowledge of PC and basic office software for communication, reporting, editing manuals, etc.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Skills for hands-on maintenance and repair of equipment according to instruction manuals. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in electro-mechanics for astronomical telescopes and it’s enclosures. Prior experience at high altitude telescope site. Ability to read and comprehend technical documents written both in English and Japanese. Ability to work with diverse sta¿s in English and Japanese.
