National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:$4,553/Mon.

DUTIES: Improves and maintains the commissioned facility instruments of the Subaru Telescope to keep and improve their reliability and performance. Troubleshoots, modifies, and upgrades the instruments in collaboration with other scientists, engineers, and technicians primarily in the Instrumentation Division, and also throughout Subaru. Appropriately evaluates the scientific performance of the instruments, and works to ensure efficient night-time operations to maximize science output. Contributes to upgrades of the instruments and new instrument projects. Drives to the summit for Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) and instrumentation duties. Co-operates with and advises PFS development team on, and participates in, implementation and commissioning of the PFS instrument, mainly for the Prime Focus Instrument (PFI) subsystem. Participates in, and advises on, ensuring this subsystem will be reliable for open-use observation. Ensures all documentation, tooling, test procedures, and fixtures are kept available for Instrument Division engineers and technicians so that the instrument can be kept operational for its service lifetime. Pursues a program of scientific or instrumentation research, publishes papers, and presents results at conferences.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in scientific instrument operations, including astronomical observations and data reduction, development and operation of optical or infrared instruments, and a program of research in astronomy.

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Considerable knowledge of observational astronomy, multiple object spectrographs, optical or infrared detectors, and spectrograph optics and alignment. Ability to undertake a program of instrumentation research, and plan and manage projects. Good written and oral communication and documentation skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to climb stairs and carry instrument parts and materials, including fiber cables, of up to forty (40) pounds for short distances. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of Linux software development, image processing and data analysis, optical design and mechanical design, systems design, and cryogenics. Experience in instrumentation project management. Proficiency in the Japanese language including speaking, reading, and writing.
