Job Vacancy - Subaru Support Astronomer

Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to three (3) years in duration with possible extension for two (2) more years), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,295/Mon.

DUTIES: Supports visiting and resident astronomers to carry out observations for maximum scientific output. Helps astronomers in the preparation of observations and data reduction. Participates in science operation of observatory instruments, checks the quality of obtained data, and keeps the instrument operational for nightly observations in cooperation with other observatory support staff. Requires travel to telescope site. May be assigned as primary scientist for one (1) instrument. A second and third instrument may be assigned as deemed appropriate. Pursues programs of astronomical research, publishes papers, and presents results at conferences. A significant amount of time will be spent at a high altitude of 14,000 feet.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in astronomical observations and data reduction, development of optical or infrared instruments, and research in astronomy. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge necessary to conduct independent astronomical research. Ability to undertake independent program in astronomical research. Good written and oral communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Driving experience of at least one (1) year. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous involvement in astronomical instrumentation including design, hardware and software development, and maintenance. Experience with image processing and data analysis. Communication skills in additional languages other than English.
