Effects of the Massive Power Outage at the Maunakea Summit Area (Final Report)

October 19, 2018
Last updated: July 1, 2023

When the massive power outage occurred across the Maunakea summit area on September 13, 2018 (Hawai'i Standard Time), one of the uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) that supplies power to the Subaru Telescope did not function properly. Therefore observations at the Subaru Telescope were cancelled temporarily. After emergency work, the observatory provisionally resumed open use observations on the night of October 2 with a limited number of observing instruments.

Following the resumption of observations, all of the observing instruments became available on October 16 and the Subaru Telescope is now ready to resume the original observation schedule.

Regarding the failed UPS, the countermeasures making use of small USPs are still temporary. The work to achieve full restoration of the UPS is expected to require more time. The observatory continues to implement precautionary measures for the safe operation of the telescope.
