Detail | : | Low Res. ( 90 KB) / Mid. Res. ( 0.98 MB) / High Res. ( 7.7 MB) NGC 958 is a spiral galaxy located in the direction of Cetus. We observe the stellar disk at an angle, featuring two prominent grand-design spiral arms and dust lanes (dark lanes) across the disk. These dust lanes consist of interstellar dust that absorbs light, predominantly ultraviolet light from stars, and re-emits its energy as infrared emission. NGC 958 is classified as an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) because of its exceptional brightness in infrared wavelengths, resulting from the absorption and re-emission processes of dust. Surrounding NGC 958, you can see many other galaxies. However, it remains unclear whether these galaxies are nearby or unrelated foreground objects.
