Sunset Skies Above the Subaru Telescope

After sunset, the Milky Way stretches across the sky to the right of the Subaru Telescope enclosure, while brilliant Venus shines low in the west to the left. The faint glow extending upward behind the enclosure toward Venus is zodiacal light, caused by sunlight scattered by dust in the Solar System. Altair appears just to the right of the enclosure, with Vega farther to the right and Deneb above them, the three stars that make up the Summer Triangle.

In the Hawaiian voyaging tradition, Humu (Altair), Keoe (Vega), and Piraʻetea (Deneb) form Huinakolu, the Navigator’s Triangle, part of Mānaiakalani, the summer-fall star line associated with Māui’s famous fishhook. These stars and other celestial patterns serve as important references in traditional Polynesian wayfinding.
