This means 'be independent, and be self-disciplined'.  This is my high school's motto, but in practice that means that the school does not have any strict rules.  I loved that.

My schedule

Most of the staff members at the Subaru Telescope are based in Hawai‘i, but I am based in the Mitaka headquarters.  I am going to show you my day in the office.

a certain day schedule

9:00

Arrival at the office

The first thing to do is to make coffee;my day does not start without it!

I then check my emails, messages on slack, etc.

10:00

Business meeting

About the next generation instrument for Subaru.

I often discuss with people from overseas. The meeting language is of course English.

11:00

Duty work following the meeting

I often come across difficult problems to address.  Hmm...

12:00

Lunch break

I like to play soccer.  There is a nice field on the campus!

13:00

Giving a class to graduate students.

I usually prepare slides in advance and discuss with students.

15:00

Research meetings and seminars.

In addition to observatory duties, I have to educate students!

17:00

Back to my duty work

In addition to the upcoming new instrument, I am also in charge of an ongoing massive project.
I have lots of things to worry about!

18:00

Return home

My day does not start without coffee!

During the lunch break, I sometimes play soccer with my colleagues.

I give a class to graduate students. I like to teach!

my memorable photo
my special item

At the top of MaunaKea

I used to go to Maunakea for observations quite often when I was a student. Weather did not always cooperate as you can see in this picture...  The only good thing about clouds overhead is that the sunset is beautiful.

Whiteboard

I often discuss complicated problems with my colleagues/students.  It is important to draw figures and write down equations to share the idea and be on the same page.
