My schedule

I usually work at the office in Hilo, but once a month I go up to the summit facility of Maunakea, where the Subaru Telescope is located, to actually check the safety of the staff with my own feet and to replenish the safety equipment. Here is a schedule of a day at the summit facility.

10:45

Record keeping

I always check the safety supplies including the oxygen cylinders prepared in case of mountain sickness due to lack of oxygen.

There are steep stairs and high places inside the Subaru’s dome, and I walk to check if there are any danger.

Staff is learning safety operations for an aerial lift. Safety training for staff working at Subaru is one of the important tasks given to the safety staff.

Rescue training

I participated in rescue training for staff working on top of the telescope and the roof of the dome. They work at such a dizzying height and need to even help the fallen staff from the height.

Rule books

Subaru is a Japanese organization where many Japanese people work. However, US law applies to the safety of staff. When I have difficulties, I open those rule books remembering my start point.
