This time lapse was taken a few miles from the Kilauea volcano ocean entry, where lava emerges from a tube to enter the ocean, generating a steam plume. At night, the plume is red, illuminated by lava. The lava also illuminates low-altitude coulds. This time lapse was shot during the Geminid meteor shower, and a few Geminids are visible.

This time lapse was shot from Mauna Kea, near the visitor center, pointing to Mauna Loa. As the Sun sets (right of the field), the sky gets very dark (no Moon) and the Milky way drifts above Mauna Loa. In the first part of the night, the southern tip of Scorpius is visible with several nebula. Later in the night, the mikly way sets and the sky becomes very dark: except from starlight, most of the light comes from airglow, which is visible as a greenish sky background. Clouds are moving from East (left) to West (right) in the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, pushed by trade winds. A small cloud (cap cloud) hovers atop Mauna Loa during the night, as moist air is pushed up by trade winds moving on the slope on Mauna Loa. The bright red spot just below the Mauna Loa summit is the Mauna Loa Observatory. Cars can be seen on the saddle road, on the Mauna Kea observatory access road and on the Mauna Loa observatory access road. The bluish haze on the West (right) of Mauna Loa summit is vog (volcanic fog) from the Kilauea volcano. A few meteorites are visible in this sequence.

Hualalai (2521 m) is Hawaii's third most active volcano. In this timelapse shot from the slope of Mauna Loa near the Mauna Loa observatory, Jupiter, Venus and then the Pleiades are setting in the western sky, over Hualalai. The faint glow at the horizon in the right is Honolulu, Hawaii's largest city.
