SUBARU TELESCOPE/FACILITY MAINTENANCE ENGINEER – ID# 16372.Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,067/Mon.
DUTIES:
Works as a member of the Technical Support Division. Coordinates and manages jobs for repair, maintenance, and upgrades for the telescope and its enclosure with outsourcing companies and purchasing equipment for the works. Duties include on-site facility management at the Maunakea summit to (1) diagnose the mechanical and electrical troubles of the telescope and its enclosure in collaboration with the Telescope Engineers, Technicians, and Day Crews, (2) plan upgrades of the telescope, the enclosure and other facilities to accommodate new functions of the telescope and new astronomical instrumentations and prepare manufacture’s drawing, and (3) instruct/direct contractors. Assists in planning, scheduling, and estimating the cost of future upgrade projects. Shifts sometimes assigned in off-hour, including weekends and holidays. Responsible for coordinating and managing repair, maintenance, and upgrades of Hilo base facility equipment.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering.
EXPERIENCE:
At least five (5) years of experience in technical field of Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering. At least three (3) years of experience in supervising maintenance/repair staff in astronomical observatories or a heavy industrial setting.
ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
Working knowledge of Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering. Working knowledge of CAD programs, PC and its off-the-shelf software (e.g., Microsoft Office). Knowledge of Mechanical Engineering of large telescopes and its enclosures. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment).
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in fabrication and/or maintenance of telescope and enclosure at major optical/infrared observatories. Experience working at high-altitude telescope site and knowledge in astronomical telescope/equipment are desirable. Good communication skills are desirable with English or Japanese-speaking engineers, technicians, administrators, and operation team staff.
