SUBARU BILINGUAL SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR – ID# 12235.National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,620/Mon.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Subaru Telescope Computer & Network System (STN) consists of server computers, tape library storage, arrayed magnetic disks, network systems, image processing workstations, personal computers for desktop publishing and other peripheral equipment such as WiFi access points and printers. These computers are mainly operated under the Linux operating system, with a number of personal computers utilizing Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Responsible for operation and management of the STN system. Occasionally, administration work on the system at the summit of Mauna Kea, and documentation on World Wide Web servers for whole system is required. Other assigned duties based on the individual's experience and abilities in construction and daily operation will be included. May take jobs assigned to both higher and lower levels of computer system administrators if they are not readily available.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Computer Science or related science/engineering field.
EXPERIENCE: At least four (4) years of experience in maintenance of large computer systems under heterogeneous environment, including network management. At least four (4) continuous years of employment with one employer as a system administrator.
ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of Linux, Microsoft Windows, MacOS, computer hardware, network, security and storage. Ability to maintain large and small computer systems, storage and network, including both software and hardware. Familiar with OS/software settings for multilanguage character support. Requires good communication skills to communicate with people. Must possess a valid driver's license and have a clean driver's abstract. Must be able to drive between Hilo and the summit in daytime and at night time. Ability to read, write and speak Japanese and English.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to stay and work at 14,000 feet for up to 14 hours. Must be able to stay and sleep at 9,000 feet and must be able to commute to the 14,000 feet summit from a lodging facility at 9,000 feet for up to five (5) days. Must be able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pound loads. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in database system operations and system programming in general field of computer system administration for large and small computer system with more than several ten nodes. Abilities of software, network, and Web program troubleshooting. Knowledge and experience on SPARC machines, Solaris OS, virtual machines, virtual storage, and installation and maintenance of typical astronomy software is desirable. Experience of astronomy data analysis using software such as IRAF, DS9 and IDL, and experience of the development/operation/maintenance of control software/hardware for astronomical telescopes and instruments. Having Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), LPIC-1 through 3 (Linux Professional Institute Certification Level 1-3), and RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer). Understanding and operation of multinational environment.
