We propose “Target of Opportunity” (ToO) observations of short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) to answer three key questions: (1) What is the contribution of sGRBs to the chemical evolution of the Universe? (2) What is the diversity of kilonovae associated with sGRBs? (3) What is the intrinsic rate of events and true energy release of sGRBs? Understanding the nature of sGRBs has gained importance because of their confirmed association with gravitational wave events. We request a total of 2.5 nights of observations, which will be complemented by our approved programs on premier facilities such as Chandra, HST, and the VLA.
