We propose deep observations of two systems HD 169142 and LkCa 15 with SCExAO coupled with CHARIS in the near-infrared and VAMPIRES at Hα. Both systems host a protoplanetary disk which feature several structures likes rings and gaps, and possibly spirals, indicative of dust evolution and/or planet formation. In addition, protoplanet candidates in a range of separation of a few tens of AU were claimed in previous studies, but are yet unconfirmed. These characteristics represent a strong astrophysical motivation to revisit these two systems with the unique instrument suite provided by Subaru with SCExAO CHARIS’s integral field broad band polarimetry mode. This program will allow to characterize the properties of the disk structures at 10–30 au separations over the major JHK passbands simultaneously. VAMPIRES Hα differential imaging will identify accretion from actively-forming planets. Combined together, these data will provide a new sharp look at the structure of planet-forming disks in key benchmark systems, clarify the nature of previously claimed planet detections, and perhaps identify hitherto unseen, lower-mass protoplanets.
