We request 25.9 hours of HSC observations to execute the northern portion of the Local Volume Complete Cluster Survey (LoVoCCS): a volume-complete survey of 144 massive, low-redshift (0.03 < z < 0.12) galaxy clusters selected from the MCXC X-ray database. Our proposed targets consist of the 33 LoVoCCS clusters accessible to HSC in S20A. We will obtain HSC griz-band data to perform high-precision weak lensing measurements of these clusters, with background source galaxies securely selected though photometric redshifts. Weak lensing masses of the complete LoVoCCS sample will enable precision cluster cosmology by establishing a robust cluster – mass observable scaling relation. With the rich, deep X-ray archival data in the northern sky, we will also be able to carry out particularly detailed studies in the scaling relations with the LoVoCCS-HSC sample. The HSC weak lensing mass maps will have a high spatial resolution so that we can explore properties of dark matter, such as the self-interaction cross section. Observations of southern LoVoCCS clusters with DECam are already underway and are scheduled through 2021. However, unlike the southern sky DECam observations, the LoVoCCS-HSC has a legacy value, since it will not be superseded by the LSST survey.
