We propose panoramic Hα mapping of a super-massive cluster (Abell 851) at z=0.405 using NB921/NB926 on HSC. Our team has pioneered this cluster by performing broad- and narrow-band (Hα) imaging survey with Suprime-Cam, and revealed that the cluster is embedded in a gigantic (≫10-Mpc scale) structure. Our observations also revealed that the average colors of galaxies sharply change at an intermediate-density (group-scale) environment, accompanying strong starbursts. By extending our Hα survey by a factor of ∼7×, we will (1) unveil the full extent of the structure traced by Hα emitters with the perfect combination of NB921/NB926 filters; (2) study the properties of (Hα-selected) galaxies residing in a full environmental range (from rich cluster core to voids), and identify the roles of local/global environment in shaping the nature of galaxies; (3) by plotting all (>1,000) Hα emitters across environment on the SFR–M⋆ diagram, we will identify the environment responsible for the rise and fall of the SF main sequence (i.e. environmental quenching). This program makes full use of the wide FoV of HSC and its unique NB filter combination. We can complete this project with only 1-night of observing time—no other telescope/instrument can do this job with such an extremely high efficiency.
