We propose a mid-IR (8β25 Β΅m) imaging survey for 39 high-mass protostars using Subaru-COMICS. The formation of high-mass stars is significantly more complicated and, therefore, far less understood than low-mass star formation. Our proposed observations will benefit studies of high-mass star formation in a variety of ways: e.g., providing or assisting determination of their masses, ages and clustering; how and when the inner disk dissipates and disk accretion terminates; what is the nature of the mid-IR extended emission and multiplicity. Mid-infrared observations is sensitive to the warm dust (100β500 K), thus providing us the best chance to study the protostellar evolution and the circumstellar environments close to the individual protostars. Furthermore, the high angular resolution (0.3β³β0.8β³) of Subaru-COMICS is essential to perform comparisons with millimeter interferometry.
After publishing the summary papers, we will release the reduced data for the entire research community to utilize the data. This will be the last chance to execute the proposed observations with an 8-10 m telescope in the northern hemisphere as COMICS will be decommissioned in summer next year.
