The Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey is an on-going 300-night project of the Subaru Telescope. All of its wide, deep, and ultradeep layers are observed in grizy broad-band filters; there are also narrow-band observations in the deep and ultradeep layers. A large cluster sample at z>1 with a well-defined selection function would be a lasting legacy from the HSC survey. Here we continue our observational campaign for the cluster mass calibration via weak lensing (WL) and velocity dispersion, a critical first step towards building up the selection function. We have used the cluster finder camira to select a sample of 6 rich clusters at z=1−1.2. Here we propose GMOS multi-object spectroscopy follow up of these clusters, aiming for 20 member galaxies per cluster. Our data will be crucial for reducing systematics in WL mass measurements of clusters at z>1. We will achieve a 20% accuracy in the normalization of the richness–cluster mass relation, and examine various aspects of galaxy–halo connection that require good estimates of cluster mass, such as the buildup of cluster galaxy population and brightest cluster galaxies. As two of our targets are likely in a merging state, we are uniquely poised to study effects of cluster dynamical states on the galaxy populations at z>1.
