To resolve the conflict between the predicted number of satellite galaxies and those observed, we propose to use Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) to conduct a comprehensive census of satellite galaxies. The excellent image quality and high areal coverage of HSC is highly complementary to the newly-commissioned Huntsman telescope, a facility specifically designed to find extended and diffuse satellite galaxies. By targeting galaxies located within new neutral hydrogen (HI) radio surveys, we will derive the total (stellar+gas) mass function for satellite galaxies around a representative sample of nearby galaxies. This can be directed compared to simulations and help address the so-called “missing satellite problem”.
