Information for New Guests at Hale Pohaku

August 22, 2012
Originally prepared by MKSS, updated and edited by Subaru for our visitors.

Welcome to Hale Pohaku, which, in Hawaiian, means House of Stone, and refers to the stone cabins located below the dormitories. The modern common building and dormitories that will be your temporary home were completed in 1983, with dorm D added in 1991. The Hale Pohaku staff would like to make your stay an enjoyable one, so please read the list of services, rules, and policies listed below and on the other side. If there is something you do not understand, or you require anything else, please ask.

RECREATION:

A TV room is available along with a pool table, and ping pong table. There is also an exercise room available for your use. There are some nearby trails to hike if you have time, but since the terrain can be rough, and the night temperature very cold, make sure you let somebody know where you will be hiking.

If you do venture out on a hike, the dominant tree in the area is a Mamane Tree, which is very slow growing, and  has the little round leaves and yellow flowers. These trees are the home of some native Hawaiian birds, such as the Palila Bird, which, like most Hawaiian birds, is an endangered species. You may also see some feral, or introduced species of birds and animals, including quail, pheasant, partridge, and even wild turkeys, pigs, goats, and mouflon sheep. You may also be fortunate enough to see a Native Hawaiian Hawk (`lo) or Owl (Pueo).

The bookstore sells souvenirs and stargazing is presented every night.
