AAT Japan Time in 2018A

According to the agreement between NAOJ and AAL (Astronomy Australia Limited), 2 night of AAT (Anglo-Australian Telescope) time will be available for Japanese researchers. If you have questions on this program, please contact iwata_at_naoj.org.

Who can apply to the time

  1. Researchers belonging to institutes in Japan or researchers in non-Japanese institutes with Japanese nationality can submit proposal(s) as PI.

Proposal submission

  1. Semester 2018A starts on February 1, 2018, and ends on July 31, 2018.
  2. Japanese proposals should be submitted to the Australian Time Allocation Committee (ATAC) in the usual manner. The format of the proposal, the use of Lens (AAT Proposal Management System), and the deadline of the application are the same as normal proposals. Applicants are required to explicitly specify "[Japanese Time]" in the title head of their proposals to distinguish from regular proposals.
  3. A proposal requesting more than two nights can be submitted, but it will be reviewed as a normal proposal, and only two nights among the approved nights will be treated as Japanese time.
  4. Additional details on proposal submission can be found at https://www.aao.gov.au/science/observing/apply-for-observing-time. AAT call for proposals will be issued on August 15, 2017, and the proposal deadline for semester 2018A will be September 15th, 2017.

Selection

  1. ATAC will allocate observing time during semester 2018A to the Japanese proposals in order of merit as Director's discretionary time (DDT), until the total number of nights allocated reaches two.
  2. Any proposals that remain will be judged as normal proposals and may be allocated time on the AAT by ATAC.
  3. Results of the selection will be reported to the Japanese representatives. The PI name, contact information, proposal title, and instrument request of all the Japanese proposals will be shared with Japanese representatives. This will include how many programs have been submitted.

Execution

  1. Japanese programs will be executed in classical mode at the AAT.
  2. The travel and accommodation costs of Japanese astronomers for AAT Japan time will be supported by Subaru Telescope, not by the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO).
  3. If more than 50% of the Japanese time in semesters 2018A and 2018B (i.e., 2 or more nights) is lost due to telescope or instrument failure (excluding time lost by weather), ATAC will try to allocate an additional 2 nights in semester 2019A or later.

Open-use policy

  1. Observing support, data delivery, and data access rights are the same as those for normal programs. Data will become public in the AAO data archive 18 months after the acquisition.
