XMM-Newton X-ray sepectral color composite image of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. The view gives an X-ray pseudo-color representation of all the sources, coded according to their X-ray hardness. The mosaic is composed of 7 partially overlapping pointings of the EPIC-pn camera and it maps the full extent of the SXDF (The field covered by the Suprime-Cam is indicated by the yellow lines). The total exposure time was approximately 400 ksec, consisting of nominal exposure times of 100 ksec for the central field, and 50 ksec each for the six flanking fields. The image of the central field approaches the confusion limit for the XMM-Newton in the soft (0.5-2 ke V) band, while together these data form the largest contiguous area over which deep X-ray observations have been performed.
