Options for the Mauna Kea Summit Area
There is no public transportation to the summit area
of Mauna Kea. If you do not already have access to a 4WD
vehicle, you will need to rent a 4WD vehicle or hire a
van and a driver from a licensed commercial tour operator.

At present, we are aware of only a single car rental company on the island of Hawaii
that provides 4WD
vehicles and PERMITS
drivers to take them to the summit area of Mauna Kea. Please consult with your travel agent, or search the web page using keywords such as "Mauna Kea drive rental".

If you are are planning a trip with a large group, you
may want to hire a van with a driver. There are currently
nine tour companies with licenses to operate in the summit
area of Mauna Kea.
