How to Apply for Filming and Photographing

Procedure for Applying

When you want to film or photograph at Subaru Telescope facilities, you ask permission for filming as follows:

  1. There are two places that you can film: the base facility in Hilo and he Subaru Telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea. Please see "Place for filming" shown below.

  2. Please down load an "Application for Filming of the Subaru Telescope" shown below, fill it, and send it to the Public Relations Office of the Subaru Telescope by FAX+1-808-934-5984 3 weeks before the filming date.

  3. We will tell you whether the application is approved or not.

  4. You will have to apply for liability insurance if approval. Please allow enough times for processing your request.

  5. If you have any questions concerning filming, please please let Public Relations Office of the Subaru Telescope know by form .

Places for Filming

  1. Base facility (Hilo Office): The base facility is in Hilo in Hawaii island (the big island). You need to film with the staff the Subaru Telescope. It takes about 20 min. from the Hilo International Airport to the base facility. It takes about two hours from the base facility to the Subaru Telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea. A four-wheel drive vehicle is mandatory for driving to the summit. Access to the Base Facility in Hilo

  2. Subaru Telescope: The Subaru Telescope is an 8.2m optical-infrared telescope at the 4200m summit of Mauna Kea. You need to film with the staff of the Subaru Telescope. You cannot film after sunset as a rule because the telescopes at the summit start to observe. The environment of the summit is "Specifications of the Subaru Telescope."
