OBSERVATION SYSTEM ASSOCIATE – ID# 16407.National Astronomical Observatory. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), located in Mauna Kea and Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $16.90/Hr.
DUTIES:
As a member of the Science Operation Division team, will take the overall responsibility for the operation of the telescope, instruments and observation control system, and assist observers by making the most effective and productive observation in very demanding working conditions. Collects necessary system and environmental data for the safe operation of the telescope, continuously monitors system status, alarms/warnings or error messages, diagnoses any problems with the system and takes remedial actions according to the operation manuals in case any problem is detected, keeps the record of operation of the telescope, reports and files system problem/trouble reports, generally is responsible for nighttime operations of the telescope (this includes but not limited to security and health/safety of the facility and personnel assigned to night operations). Responsible for ensuring all telescope settings will provide optimal viewing observations consistent with the established night operations procedures to optimize the telescope performance per collected data. Observes weather conditions to determine suspension of observations.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Associate's Degree from an accredited community college with an emphasis in Astronomy, Science or a technical field.
EXPERIENCE:
One to three (1-3) years of experience working in a large astronomy observatory or other large scientific/research platform involving use of computers, mechanical/electrical/electronic/optical controls and instrumentation.
ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
Knowledge of astronomical telescopes and/or astronomical instruments is required, including telescope startup, shutdown and troubleshooting. Knowledge of standard word processor, spreadsheet, drawing programs and Unix-based operation system. Telescope startup, shutdown, and troubleshooting. Ability to effectively interact and communicate through electronic mail and in person are required. Must complete training and pass CPR test and Emergency Medical Responder Class for adult first aid, emergency oxygen administration, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) usage. Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance, and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to sleep at high altitude (Hale Pohaku: 9,000 feet). Must be able to lift/carry thirty (30) pounds of equipment, able to climb ladders, to crawl on one’s hands into narrow spaces and to work in narrow areas without any problems.
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in operation and maintenance at Subaru Telescope and ability to speak English and Japanese. Prefer candidates with approximately two (2) years of actual work experience with operations of a large astronomical telescope and/or instrumentation. Possesses computer programming skills.
