SUBARU TELESCOPE INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEER – ID# 16373.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,620/Mon.


DUTIES:
Responsible for technical maintenance of the commissioned facility instruments and new instrument projects for the 8.2 meter Subaru Telescope. Works with instrument engineers and technicians and cooperates with instrument scientists to keep the instruments operational. Provides professional engineering designs of systems (electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics) for upgrades of the commissioned facility instruments and new instruments for the 8.2 meter Subaru Telescope.


PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Engineering, Physics, or Astronomy.


EXPERIENCE:
Three to five (3-5) years of professional experience in electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics engineering, including experience in systems design work.


ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
Knowledge of system design, interface specifications, and systems documentation techniques including block diagramming, flow charting, and preparing technical and operations manuals. Knowledge of electronics, mechanics, or optics theory, instrumentation, and test equipment and procedures. Ability to apply fundamental mathematical and statistical analysis techniques as required for astronomical applications. Ability to define, design, and construct electronics, mechanics, optics, or opto-mechanics systems and components, and to test and evaluate. Good written and oral communication and documentation skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.


PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous involvement in astronomical instrumentation including design, software and hardware development, maintenance, and engineering project management. Ability to speak and understand Japanese language.
