- SUBARU INSTRUMENTATION ASSOCIATE

SUBARU INSTRUMENTATION ASSOCIATE – ID# 12541.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (3 years in duration), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,416/Mon.

DUTIES: Perform upgrades, modifications and maintenance on the commissioned instruments of the Subaru Telescope to improve their reliability and performance. Pursue a program of astronomical research.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: At least three (3) years of experience in astronomical observations and data reduction, development and operation of optical or infrared spectrographs, and a program of research in astronomy.

ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of observational astronomy, fiber optics, multiple object spectrographs, infrared array detectors and spectrograph optics and alignment. Ability to undertake a program of astronomical research. Ability to plan and manage projects. Good written and oral communication skills. Ability to work extensively in the daytime at the Mauna Kea summit (at an altitude of 14,000 feet) and to a lesser extent at night. Maintain a valid driver's license and be able to operate four-wheel drive vehicles. Ability to safely operate an overhead crane of up to 5,000 pound capacity.

Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.

Physical/Medical Requirements: Work at an altitude of 14,000 feet including climbing stairs and carrying loads up to 40 pounds for short distances.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Skills in the following areas are desirable: Linux software development, image processing and data analysis, optical design and alignment,mechanical design, systems design, cryogenics.
