JOB VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT - PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER/SCIENTIST

PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER/SCIENTIST – ID# 10114.

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope Project, located in Hilo, Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds.

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,416/Mon.

DUTIES: Works out of the Public Information & Outreach Office (PIO) and is responsible for the public information at Subaru Telescope.  Takes charge of Subaru’s website, releases, other publications for the public, and responds to the media and inquiries from the general public.  Pursues individual research work in Astronomy or Planetary Science; publish scientific papers and present results at international conferences.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or closely related field.

EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in public information at a scientific or educational institution, or one to three (1-3) years of experience in science communication in other organizations.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILL: Knowledge of effective writing in science communication, technical and legal issues with the electronic and the conventional form of publications, image processing for publications. Basic understandings of the file server.  Ability to produce text and visual materials for a variety of targeted readers who are not specialized in this field, in a timely manner. Skilled in the text and image processing. Good writing and efficient communication skills in both English and Japanese.  Familiar with the effective use of still cameras and video cameras. Able to write and publish scientific research papers. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
POST OFFER/EMPLOYMENT CONDITION: Must be able to pass post-offer criminal background check.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post-offer/periodic high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Proficient in the use of the Adobe Creative Suites software and in the website development. Working knowledge of network security and LINUX as a high-end user. Experience as a webmaster for the publically open website (professional, official; not personal blogs). Be competent in research field. Experience in teaching Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science or related field to the high school level or higher level.
