Keck Laser Guide Experiment in January 2002

December 3, 2001

Keck Telescope has developed the Adaptic Optics system using the laser guide stars at the summit of Mauna Kea. They have made various tests for the potential effects of the laser guide system to the environment (namely, to other telescopes, airplanes, satellites) at the Lick observatory. Mauna Kea Directors Meeting agreed that they will start the real observations from summer 2002 considering their establishment of the treatment for such environmental effects.

Based on the agreement, Keck Observatory proposed to make test observations at the summit of Mauna Kea on 11, 22, and 23 January, 2002. Subaru Telescope agreed and will cooperate that. A UH run and a AO group GT run are allocated at the time and there is no net effect for any Open Use observations. We will see how much and what kind of effects there are, and will give some feedback to the community. We will explain more details in the Users' Meeting in December 11-12. If you would have any comments or opinion, please give us then.
